The year 2023 marks a decade since the two of us first came together to turn our shared vision into a reality. The journey has been nothing short of extraordinary, filled with moments of triumph, learning, and growth. When we founded the Health Information Systems Program(HISP) Uganda, we aimed to support the strengthening of information systems in developing countries, and I am proud that we have not only met but exceeded those expectations. Looking back, I am reminded of the countless hours of hard work, the sleepless nights, and the collective dedication that brought us to this point. We faced skepticism and uncertainty, but we persevered, fueled by the belief that our cause was worth every sacrifice. What makes our organization special is not just the goals we have achieved, but the community and family built. Each member as well as supporter has played a crucial role in shaping HISP Uganda's identity and impact. It is heart-warming to see the diverse talents and perspectives that have enriched our work and contributed to our success. As we celebrate this milestone, we are committed to renewing our values that have guided us from the beginning. We remain steadfast in our dedication to support the use of sustainable and integrated information systems for action, and continue to adapt and innovate in the face of new challenges. To everyone who has been part of this incredible journey, thank you for your unwavering support and commitment. To the next 10 years of making a positive difference in the world!
- Fulgentius Baryarama, PhD
Reflecting on a journey we embarked on a decade ago, I am filled with a profound sense of gratitude and pride. When we founded HISP Uganda, our vision was ambitious, and our dreams were bold. We dared to imagine a world where support for the use of sustainable and integrated information systems for action was not just a goal but a reality. In the early years, our resilience and commitment were tested. Yet, through collective determination, a dedicated and passionate team, and unwavering belief in our cause, we overcame hurdles and laid the foundation for what HISP Uganda has become today. Our journey has been marked by milestones, achievements, and, most importantly, the positive impact we have had in the local, national, and regional information systems spaces. I would like to express my deepest appreciation to each and every member who has been part of this splendid journey. Your dedication, hard work, trust and passion have been the driving force behind our success. We are encouraged to see how our shared vision has inspired not only us, but also countless others who joined our cause along the way. As we celebrate this milestone, we are not only looking back at our accomplishments but also look forward to the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. Our work is far from over, and there is a lot to be accomplished. I am confident that, with the same spirit of collaboration and innovation that brought us this far, HISP Uganda will strive harder to make an even greater impact in the years to come. Thank you for a remarkable 10 years. Here's to the next decade of making a difference together!
- Prosper Behumbiize, PhD
HISP Uganda began as a conversation, one among many that would later grow into an icon that you see today. “...our journey will be one of dedication and resilience... .”echoed Prosper in one of the meeting rooms. A room earlier-on acting as a living space at Dr. Baryarama’s residence. Dr. FB, as the team fondly refers to him, graciously converted his home living space into a meeting room. Here, brainstorming sessions turned into ideas on how collectively a few individuals could make positive contributions to the health care system in Uganda and abroad. Progressively, the living space transitioned to several meeting sessions at the Makerere University canteen, where more like-minded individuals joined the cause; one that was vague, risky and seemed impossible at the time. “....we were all working, had stable jobs and families. The idea to leave our workplaces and join a startup was scary, unpredictable and unserious,” recounts one of the members who joined the team later.
The sessions at the University canteen later gave birth to a rather impactful project, SMGL funded by MUJHU and hosted at Makerere School of Public Health (MakSPH). Call it a seed project, yet fundamentally important in terms of outcome as the first HISP Uganda team worked with health facilities in Kamwenge District ( in western Uganda) to provide real time data for health care providers to take life-saving actions. At the time, there were a few volunteers at HISP Uganda, who gave their time and effort to make a difference. This selflessness , dedication and zeal to make a real impact constituted the bedrock on which HISP Uganda stands today, and perhaps will endure for generations to come.
The Health Information Systems Program (HISP) Uganda is a company limited by a guarantor, registered in Uganda, with the US Federal government and the University of Oslo for contracts and grants. It comprises a dedicated team of informaticians, technologists, and public health professionals and draws upon the global HISP network community for specific expertise. HISP Uganda subscribes to and supports the broader HISP agenda of creating “networks of action,”.
This seeks to strengthen collaborative action by learning and sharing information systems, including software development, customization, installation, training, and implementation experiences, in a collaborative network. HISP Uganda collaborates with ministries, higher institutions of learning, NGOs, and implementing and development partners to support strengthening information systems and data utilization in sectors such as health, environment, education, and governance.
